“Everything in Between” is about the systems, institutions, and practices that people build, “things” of a sort that sit in between us, between groups of us, between “us” and “them,” and between us and other systems and institutions that seem terribly far away: “the market,” “the state,” the universe, and so on. Once a week, usually on a Monday, I’ll have something new.
Inigo: I admit it. You are better than I am!
Man in Black: Then we are you smiling?
Inigo: Because I know something you don’t know.
Inigo: I am not left-handed!
Man in Black: You’re amazing.
Inigo: I ought to be after twenty years.
Man in Black: There is something I ought to tell you.
Inigo: Tell me.
Man in Black: I’m not left-handed either.
I am not left-handed.
My right-handed interest in leadership goes back a long ways, longer, in fact, than my left-handed interest in institutions. The two things intersect, of course, in interesting and important ways. More details on the intersections are yet to come, I suspect. Meanwhile, for the new year, I’m adding to my social media inventory a brand new thing: a podcast. “Your Leadership Podcast.” Today, the podcast went live on Spotify, with this teaser:
The first full episode will be released next Monday (January 13), with later episodes appearing more or less every other week after that. In short order episodes will be available on other platforms, including Amazon and Apple.
The podcast is a collaboration between me and my long-time friend Kathy Edersheim. Details on both of us are available at this website, the cleverly-named “yourleadership.net”; the podcast also now has its own page on LinkedIn. It grows out of the fact that Kathy and I met more than 20 years ago through our alumni volunteering and grew our learning and practice of leadership in and eventually out of that setting. I’ve written about leadership in the legal setting, here, and have been teaching a course on leadership at my law school for about 10 years. I’m an active member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Section on Leadership. (Nevertheless, the podcast is not “leadership for lawyers.” Kathy has a recent book out.
We’re starting the podcast with modest ambitions. The show is conversational and reflective. We’re hoping to cultivate an audience of people who are thinking about leadership, or who find themselves in leadership roles … or who don’t, but who might be prompted to think differently about themselves, their places in their worlds, and their capacity for doing what they think may need to be done. We don’t have a leadership playbook to run or to prescribe. We have questions and we have themes.
Please consider joining us.
Inigo: Who are you?
Man in Black: No one of consequence.
Inigo: I must know.
Man in Black: Get used to disappointment.
